FULL-STACK SOFTWARE ENGINEER

Matthew
Walden

Software Engineer at State Farm.

I help deliver vehicle and driver enrollment systems for Drive Safe & Save® Business. Outside work, I’m building Time2Bike for bike race management, and I founded ReAdmin, an HR platform for Roblox communities.

  • Node.js
  • AWS
  • tRPC
  • MongoDB
  • Postgres
  • Redis / Valkey
  • Kubernetes

State Farm

Sep 2025 — Present

Software Engineer II

  • Leading the cutover from legacy enrollment code to a design with less state to manage. The redesign has removed roughly 40,000 lines of code while preserving the processing order needed for time-sensitive events.
  • Helping deliver vehicle and driver enrollment systems for Drive Safe & Save® Business. Our middleware supports agent enrollments, consent, account setup with the telematics vendor, and vehicle and driver changes throughout the policy lifecycle.
  • Building an internal observability platform for event search, flow visualization, and replay, supported by structured logging and distributed tracing.

State Farm

Jan — Sep 2025

Software Engineer I

  • Led the migration of 18 standalone JavaScript services into a unified TypeScript monorepo, reducing duplication and improving maintainability.
  • Built an internal tool to track and remediate failed events across the team’s distributed services.
  • Migrated the enrollment UI from React to Next.js, defining authentication, data display, and caching patterns.

State Farm

May 2024 — Jan 2025

Enterprise Technology Intern

  • Built an integration test suite for the team’s AWS Lambda and SQS middleware, creating safer production deployments.
  • Proposed and prototyped TypeScript adoption for the team’s infrastructure projects.

Bloxlink

Jun 2021 — May 2024

Full-stack Developer

  • Developed and optimized the API and web application for a platform serving 2.5M monthly active users and 15M+ total accounts.
  • Implemented Chargebee subscription management for automated billing and entitlements.
  • Integrated Roblox OAuth2 authentication into the user verification flow.

02 / SELECTED PROJECTS

Projects I’ve put a lot into.

Time2Bike BUILDING NOW

A platform for running bike races.

I’m building Time2Bike to handle the tedious parts of organizing a bike race digitally: event setup, registration and payments, waivers, check-in, live timing, and results. Teams, volunteers, and race series are part of the same platform.

THE ENGINEERING PROBLEM

Organizers already have plenty to handle. The software should take admin off their plate so they can focus on running the race. That means making these tools work together, including when the venue has no signal or a late entry needs an override.

I built an infrared timing system for Time2Bike, used at Truett McConnell University’s 2026 dual slalom race.

WHAT THE PLATFORM HANDLES
  1. 01
    BEFORE THE RACE

    Get the event organized.

Set up races, categories, and pricing. Handle registrations, payments, waivers, and volunteer shifts in one place.

  2. 02
    AT THE VENUE

    Check-in through live timing.

Handle walk-up entries, assign plates, check riders in, and time the race without moving between separate systems.

  3. 03
    BEYOND ONE EVENT

    Results, teams, and series.

Publish results to rider profiles, manage teams and clubs, and connect events into series with standings.

(opens in a new tab)

I built ReAdmin’s dashboard, backend, and Roblox integration as its sole developer: hiring, staff records, team hierarchies, time tracking, and live support in one platform. I originally started ReAdmin, brought it under Bloxlink, then reacquired it and restarted it with Anthony in 2023.

  • Staff records & hiring

Applications, staff history, promotions, write-ups, and suspensions, with automatic Roblox rank changes when staff actions called for them.

  • Teams & approval chains

Teams had leads and reporting hierarchies. Time-off and expense requests followed configurable approval chains, with comments and a record of each decision.

  • Session summaries & time tracking

Recorded activity became session summaries and reports. An early-access timeclock let staff clock in and out, with shifts shown alongside tracked in-game time.

  • Live chat & remote admin

Staff could chat with players across Roblox, the website, and Discord, handle support tickets, and moderate live game servers from the dashboard.

RDC 2024

We were invited to and attended the Roblox Developers Conference in San Jose for ReAdmin in 2024.

THE ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Working within Roblox’s limits.

Keeping tens of thousands of users in sync around Roblox’s restrictive APIs was a challenge across the whole platform. At the same time, games sent large batches of activity that needed to become usable staff records and session summaries.

I designed the data models to keep processing and historical queries efficient and operating costs low. Records connected events to sessions and groups, with years of activity available to explore.

A bit more about me.

I like writing code, making projects, mountain biking, and running. There’s also radio, documenting old Long Lines sites, and the story of how Time2Bike got started.
